Dear Mr. Chairman: The following telegram receiv ed today will be of interest to you. Please publicize its contents: “Hon Charles H. Robertson, “15-53 Administrator War Savings Staff Federal Bldg., “Greensboro, N. Car. “Secretary Morgenthau today issued the following statement: “ ‘The impression seems to have spread that I regard the volun tary War Bond Program as a ‘failure’. This is not only a dis tortion of anything I have said on the subject, but it is also an injustice to the hundreds of thou sanas or aevotea volunteers in ail parts of the country who are work ing night and day to enlist the •ion’s savings for 4he war. In ^ of our swiftly rising war enditures, I have said that the Voluntary War Bond Program alone cannot close the gap be tween the amount of money avail able for consumer spending and the supply of goods available for civilian use. I have said that it must therefore be supplemented by a more drastic and comprehen sive tax program including a tax on spendings. A part of which would be treated as a debt to the taxpayer and repaid after the war. We shall, however, continue to rely upon voluntary lending for a large part of our financing. The mounting requirements of the war demand that our sale of war -Continued on Back Page_ CURB REPORTER Mrs. Helen Hedekin has gradu ated from the WAACS at Des Moines, Iowa, and now has the rank of a lieutenant, according to reports reaching Tryon. . . . Weather during the weekend: Sat urday high 83, low 59; Sunday high 85, low 60 ... . The H. H. Parmelees are on their way to Tryon after spending the sum mer in Maine .... They will arrive about the 25th after visit ing along the route .... Polk bounty has not reached the half way mark in buying War Bonds and Stamps and half of the month will be here this week. Our goal is $18,400. Every stamp and bond bought helps us do our part in winning the war .... Depot Agent F. R. Brown’s new address this winter will be 621 73rd St., Hilton Village, Va. Pvt.
